The refugees in Burma are lacking supplies. None of the big NGO cares for them. This is why Dr Cynthia founded a mobile medics team, called the Backpack Medics.
These medics receive special training before starting their work in the jungle areas of Burma. They are funded from donations. Carrying big backpacks full of medicine and medical supplies they enter Burma on hidden paths to reach the villages inside Burma most in need of their help. There they stay for 6 months until they return to Mae Sot.
After a short time of recreation and training they return to Burma again with more supplies. The medics try to help as much as they can. They treat injured people and perform amputations. They can effectively treat Malaria and parasites like worms and scabies, which are especially prevalent among children. They assist mothers in labour and vaccinate children. Apart from that, they organise transport for serious cases to the Mae Tao Clinic.
An important part of their work is information about hygiene, the prevention of diseases and family planning. They also have a supply of condoms and pills with them.
There are more than 60 of these mobile Backpack Medics teams.
