Newsletter: A meaningful Christmas!
It's not just the effect of the economic crisis, but also of the developments in Burma. The result is that everyone forgets the refugees and that yet again they are victims. We represent a hope for them, because unlike other organizations we will remain at the border until these people are able to safely go back to their country. In order to do this we and they need your help. Every euro has a big value.
Maybe this year is the right one to give presents which make sense. What about donating a school year to a refugee child or the daily lunch for the whole school year? It's not the usual gift for our loved ones, but a present which makes two people happy.
Thanks for supporting us and the refugees in these difficult times.

Our Christmas campaign “A school year under the Christmas tree” was founded in 2003. With the money raised we will be able to ensure education to many refugee children. Currently almost 2.500 kids attend our schools (totally 37.300 since 2002) and can therefore hope for a better future.
One school year at one of our “Ray of Hope” schools costs 75 euros. The daily meal from our yummy! kitchen costs another 66 euros.
Have you ever thought about replacing the usual Christmas present with a school year for a refugee child in the name of your loved ones? You can't imagine how happy this person will be with such a present! It's very easy: you just need to attach the payment receipt or, even better, one of our donation coupons to one of our Christmas cards and there you go with your present which makes sense. The joy is triple: of the person who makes the present, of the person who gets the present and of the refugee child who receives the gift. Thank you!

The first schools have been closed, rice portions in the refugee camps have been drastically reduced. Almost one million refugees are in a difficult situation, because of the developments in Burma. They can't go back to their country, because they don't have any documents or even a place to rebuild their life. The world public opinion has more important things to think about: the rush to get the riches of Burma. And what will happen with the people?
Our “Ray of Hope” schools are still well provided. Every day we receive support requests from other refugee schools, but unfortunately we can only give negative answers. One school year for a refugee child costs only 75 €.
At the moment our yummy! kitchen is cooking “only” 3.500 meals daily for the children of 13 refugee schools and 6 dormitories. We also had to suspend our “Fruit and milk” program. In other schools the cases of diseases and deficiencies are increasing. With just 30 cents we can cook and deliver a healthy meal, with 66 € we can provide the meals for the whole school year.
Save the Children UK is a partner of Help without Frontiers Thailand and supports an educational development project for refugees who work in huge rose plantations South of Mae Sot. The workers don't use any kind of protection and are exposed to pesticides and to other chemicals. Especially the children pay the consequences, which show up in the form of rashes, allergies and other illnesses.

Our “Rays of Youth” project was founded four years ago and is the most followed program of this kind at the border and more and more even in Thailand. The successful and autonomous work of 4 youth leaders and their peers in many schools is appreciated by different Ministries and NGOs in Thailand. The first financial contributions have been paid, also for our big Media Festival in Mae Sot.
Even the Thai TV and radio reported about our youth, who are regularly invited to workshops and to youth meetings all over Thailand.
Save the Children UK and World Vision are partners of this project.
The music channel MTV invited four of our “Rays of Youth” to Jakarta (Indonesia) to participate to an international youth meeting. They were involved in different workshops and had the opportunity to join some concerts of local stars. Our ROY were obviously on cloud nine! They represented Thailand, even though they're not Thai.
Here you can have a look at the self-produced video with the first lyrics created, which they composed and produced completely by themselves. The title of the song is “Working together” and it has become the hymn of Help without Frontiers.

We hoped, but we were at the same time a bit anxious about how our celebration would turn out. Our expectations were exceeded and we were all moved by the positive response and support we received on this important occassion. We will still benefit from this big motivational push for a long time.
After the welcoming greetings of Benno Röggla and of the mayor of Bressanone Albert Pürgstaller to over 200 guests, Don Paolo Renner introduced a few minutes of deep reflection and thanksgiving.
Lena Weller and Benno Röggla traced ten years of activity with pictures and videos produced by our “Rays of Youth” and by our volunteers. Even some long term partners and employees who work at the border took the floor. The students of our schools sent their touching wishes through some video messages.
Helmuth Wolf and Raimund Ausserhofer, long term members and school adopters, spoke about their personal commitment, about the visit to the schools they support and invited other businessmen to engage themselves in direct and multi-year forms of support like these.
Klaus Zoderer (20) from Silandro spoke on behalf of over 100 volunteers about his experience at the border, which was very important for him presonally and for his future.

Since mid-October we have a new coordinator, Karin Thaler from Bressanone. Together with Alessandra Degli Esposti she will carry on the work of Help without Frontiers during the next ten years.
We wish Karin and Alessandra energy, joy, few worries and to always carry the sun in their hearts.
