The Mae Tao Clinic has started, 3 years ago, producing its own prostheses for landmines victims. The Clinic provides treatments and rehabilitations as well.
Prostheses are necessary to survive in such a difficult environment. Having prostheses helps the victims to gain their own independence and give them the possibility to move around but most of all, allows them to keep working. Without prostheses they would not be able to work in the fields and support their own family.
People have to depend on their own forces to keep living; in such harsh condition the traditional social network is basically not existent anymore. If they get ill or even worse, if they have an accident with a mine, there is basically no hope for the future and for heir family.
All prostheses are strong and steady. Land mines victims must be able to move and work in mountainous wild regions. It would be very difficult to mend them up if they would not work properly anymore, as they would have to be sent back to the clinic.
It would cost money and they would have to wait several weeks before getting them back.
Prostheses are built up in laboratories by voluntaries that are themselves landmines victims.
Normally after the amputation the victims receive cares and rehabilitation for four months, during this period they have the possibity to adapt to their new life as handicap carriers. Victims receive also psychological support to cope with a new life and find the courage to go on. In this preliminary phase it is extremely important for them to talk with other landmines victims who have been working for the clinic for years. When the wounds are finally healed they are ready to receive their own prostheses.
The funding takes care not only of the cost for the material used to produce the prostheses but also helps with boarding a lodging the landmines victims and their relatives.
Help without Borders supports the entire supply of prostheses for the year 2003 with 150 pieces. The number of prostheses produced is 100% higher than the previous year as the landmines accidents have also dramatically increased.
