The number of land mine victims in Burma (Myanmar) has been increasing, millions of land mines lie buried in the ground and are a constant threat to the people's lives and health. Mines make no difference, they kill and mutilate - regardless of age or sex. In the jungle mountains of the border area there is no medical treatment available for land mine victims. They only get an emergency amputation which removes the mutilated limb. As soon as they can be transported, they are carried to the clinic, a march which can last several days. There they receive proper medical treatment including an amputation performed by a doctor. The victims and their closest relatives usually spend about 4 months in the clinic to recover from the land mine accident and learn to cope with the situation.
We do not only pay for treatment and accommodation, but also for the prosthesis. The workshop, lead by Maw Khel, manufactures about 200 durable high quality prostheses suitable for constant use in the jungle areas and thus enables the victims to return to an almost normal life worthy of a human being. Without a prosthesis they would not be able to earn a living for themselves and their families.
Also other patients are taken to the Accident and Trauma Ward to receive treatment. Minor operations are performed by medics, serious cases are transferred to the Mae Sot Hospital. Help Without Frontiers funds these expenses.
The entire project is funded by regular donations from the state South Tyrol (Cabinet Department).
