Approximately 600.000 Internally Displaced People (IDP) are hiding in the remote jungles on the Burmese side of the border. They were forced to flee with incredible violence by the Burmese army and live in constant fear of being targeted again.

Most of these makeshift refugee villages can be reached only by foot, sometimes after several days of hiking in extremely difficult conditions. All the villagers are malnourished, weak and sick. In the hiding areas of the IDPs inside Karen-State alone approx. 1.000 schools with more then 80.000 students exist. The education system inside Karen-State is organized by the KED-Karen Education Department, which also takes care of all schools, teachers and students. All the teaching supplies, stationary, uniforms, sport supplies, medicine and toiletries need to be transported by porters.

Help without Frontiers is funding schools inside Karen-State for several thousand students and sending in addition, if logistics allow, also rice, blankets, mosquito nets and medicine. KED is taking care of the transport, the accounting and supervision, as well as the teachers' training. At the end of every year we receive from KED complete narrative and financial reports of each school, including all the original receipts and invoices.

If the security situation allows, also representatives of Help without Frontiers are permitted to visit selected schools. Only those schools in the border area can be visited on a regular basis without problems.

The cost of sending a refugee child to school is on average 50 Euro per year (approx. 75 USD). This varies from 20 Euro inside Burma to a 100 Euro on the Thai side (40 to 150 USD). Several schools in the border area of the Karen State are funded by school adopters which commit for at least 3 years.
