The Karen

The Karen are a very old people. Much older than 2743 years, as counted by their calendar. They live in the East of Burma, in the Irrawaddy delta, but also in the West of Thailand. There are two major groups of the Karen, the Sgaw Karen are mostly Christian, the Pwo Karen are mostly Buddhist with Animist influences. 30% of the 14 Million Karen are Christians of various denominations.


A heartwarming experience
The Karen are a colorful, cheerful and hospitable people. They are closely linked to their traditions, which are deeply rooted in their society. Most of them are farmers and they speak their own languages with various dialects. Generally cheerful, they enjoy their traditional celebrations. Their famous dances, the Don Dance and the Bamboo Dance are graceful, but physically very demanding for the dancers. Their national costumes are colorful, but modest.
